Crown Lengthening

The job of a dentist is to try to save teeth.  A cavity is normally filled rather than pulling the tooth out.

It is possible for a cavity to decay a tooth beyond the point where normal restoration can be done.  This is where crown lengthening comes in.  Crown lengthening is a common surgical practice that remodels the curvature of the gum line.  A crown is not actually lengthened in this case.  Instead, the gum line is lowered.  Should there not be enough tooth structure to attach a crown, this is the only alternative.  Should a tooth be broken below the gum line, crown lengthening can be used to expose more of the tooth giving the dentist more to work with.
